What's are the beginning signs of a possible identity crisis?
The first sign comes when someone attempts to tell you who you are...or rather who you are not.
I remember the words so clearly coming from a significant other after telling him that I wanted a house. I wanted to live in a suburban neighborhood, with the 2 car garage, 4 bedrooms, 2 bath home. And he said..we can get a doublewide trailer and some land, and be good. I was like nope that's not me. It's not what I see for myself or my children. That's when he looked at me and said, "you're trying to be more than you are." Back then I really didn't know how to respond to that statement except to say..well we simply not on the same page, and needless to say we broke up. At this time I was literally living in the projects with my 2 daughters, and seemingly no way to get to this dream I seen constantly in my spirit.
Well 2 days ago, as my sister and I were talking on the phone, I was reminded of this statement spoken to me years ago, and needless to say, the Holy Spirit begin to speak concerning this subject.
I was reminded of Matthew 16:13-16 "Who do people say the Son of Man is?" And they answered, Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets. "Then He asked them, but who do you say that I am? Simon Peter replied, You are the Christ, the Son of the living God."
See when the enemy comes for your identity, the first thing he does is challenge your knowledge about who you are. When that guy told me I was trying to be more than I am, although I was not IN God yet (not saved) I knew that where he was trying to take me was not where I belonged. So the next question is..."who do you say that I am? and who told you that?"
See when someone comes up to you and tell you this: you think more of yourself than you are..then they try to throw this scripture at you, Romans 12:3 "...not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith." Make sure you respond to them in this manner...this scripture confirms that you can only think of yourself to the degree that God sees you according to the measure of faith He has given.
If you skip over to John 18: 32-37..you get another glimpse of this when Pilate is asking Jesus if He is a king, and Jesus responds by asking him, who told you that...go back to the beginning in the Garden of Eden...when Adam heard God coming..and he hid..when Adam let the Father know he hid from Him because he was naked, The Lord asked him, "who told you you were naked?"
The moral of the story is...the only way anyone can tell you who your are, is if the Father, Himself has revealed to them who He created you to be. And they will have no choice but to speak to you according to that declaration. Yet for those who speak to some kind of way "bring you down" or cause you to look at yourself in a manner that God has not spoken concerning you, then the Father has not given them eyes to see who He created you to be. Most people can only see you in your current state, so when they speak that's the "you" they are speaking too, and what they don't realize is that you are not at your end result yet. You are in the hand of the Potter, being squashed, remade, put into the refiners fire...and coming out pure gold. Simply meaning, I'm a work in progress. I am constantly being changed into who He created me to be, which is the ultimate goal in life.
It doesn't matter what we accomplish in this life, no one is more successful than the one who finds out who God created them to be, and BECOMING THAT. At that moment you realize who your are can't be duplicated, because you are so thoroughly unique, that no one alive can do what you were born to do.
So the only voice that matters when it comes down to telling you who you are..is the one that confirms what you already heard GOD SAY concerning yourself.
"It would be a travesty to have lived this life, and never became who God created you to be."-Margo Anderson
